By the Numbers: Texas PMP in 2021
It has been more than two years since the Texas State Board of Pharmacy mandated that prescribers and pharmacists check the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) before prescribing and dispensing controlled substances. Since March 1, 2020, there has been a steady decrease in the number of controlled substances dispensed and an increase in user registrations and searches of the PMP.
Recent dispensation data from the Texas State Board of Pharmacy shows there was a 3.6% decrease in total controlled substance dispensations, from 36.3 million in 2020 to 35 million in 2021.
The importance of increasing the effec- tive use of the PMP is greater than ever as overdose deaths continue to be on the rise nationwide. Provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 100,306 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States from April 2020 to April 2021, increasing 28.5% from the 78,056 deaths from the same period last year. Opioid overdose deaths increased nearly 35% from 56,064 to 75,673 in the same 12-month period.
Overall, this fiscal year saw a 35% increase in total user searches with PMP over the previous year. Checking the PMP for every patient every time helps prevent opioid misuse and overdose in your community. Thank you for continuing to use the PMP.
