Pain is complex. Discussing it with your patients doesn’t have to be.

Physicians and other health care professionals often provide care for patients who are experiencing pain. To inform prescribing decisions and prevent prescription drug misuse, prescribers are required to check the Texas Prescription Monitoring Program before prescribing opioids, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or carisoprodol. This may lead to some challenging conversations with your patients.

To assist you in having meaningful conversations with patients about the Texas PMP and about the safe and effective alleviation of pain, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Texas State Board of Pharmacy have created a new series of communication training videos available for free at txpmp.org.

Each video is less than two minutes in length and features evidence-based techniques for building trust and understanding, using patient-centered language, navigating difficult conversations, and more.

The words you use impact the care your patient receives. Effective communication skills can be learned, and are vital to providing the highest quality care for your patients.
