Texas Prescription Monitoring Program Fiscal Year 2023: A Year in Review
The Texas Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) is a valuable patient care tool that helps inform prescribing practices and address prescription drug misuse, diversion and overdose. In March 2020, the Texas Legislature mandated that physicians check the Texas PMP before prescribing opioids, benzodiaz- epines, barbiturates or carisoprodol.
Physicians across the state integrated the Texas PMP into their daily workflows, helping improve communication and patient-centered care. In the three years since, the number of physicians registered to use the Texas PMP has increased from 53.9% to 83.9%.
On September 1, 2023, the Texas State Board of Pharmacy began offering statewide integration and NarxCare at no cost to providers and practices—a solution that provides immediate access to the Texas PMP through electronic health records (EHRs).
Here’s a by-the-numbers glance at data from the Texas PMP over the past fiscal year.
